Catholic Charities Corporation Administrative Offices:
7911 Detroit AvenueOur camp counselors are young men and women with demonstrated maturity who are at least 18 years of age.
We carefully select our counselors after extensive interviews and background checks. References are checked for each applicant. Our training topics meet or exceed the standards of the American Camp Association. Throughout the training, our leadership drives home the importance of vigilant supervision and the responsibility to set a positive example for campers at all times.
The core of our summer staff is our cabin counselors. Each summer, we gather a group of dedicated individuals whose main objective is to make a positive and memorable contribution to the lives of children. Many of our counselors return year after year, and most were campers themselves at one time. They learn to work with every child to best meet each child’s needs. In a difficult situation, they are trained to ask, “What can I do to turn this situation around into something positive? What do I have to do to help this child succeed?” Great counselors observe the individual interests and needs of each child and help guide them into appropriate activities that result in success.
Counselors are instructed to neither solicit nor accept gratuities or “tips.” The counselor’s job is to help your camper enjoy camp, and we want our staff to do this regardless of the family’s ability to provide a financial incentive. If you feel that you would like to express your appreciation, a gift to the Campership Fund in the counselor’s honor and/or a letter of recommendation from you is appropriate. When we receive such donations or commendations, the counselor will be notified, and a copy of the letter is placed in the staff member’s personnel file.
