Catholic Charities Corporation Administrative Offices:
7911 Detroit AvenueAt Camp Christopher, we strive to ensure that everyone feels welcome within our campgrounds.
Camp Christopher is proud to say that bullying is NOT a common occurrence at Camp Christopher. And we know this because we are committed to continually monitoring the culture at camp. Every week, we collect data from campers assessing what, if any, incidents of bullying or inappropriate behavior may have occurred. We update policies and procedures as necessary to address evolving issues.
Catholic Charities employs the tenants of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program and utilizes daily group lessons to encourage and support campers in their development of values and ethical behaviors they can rely on while at camp. Character education is gently woven throughout all aspects of the camp’s programs. It fosters qualities such as honesty, respect for self and others, property morality, responsibility, human dignity, empathy, justice, and concern for the common good. Living with and working together with people who are different from us creates an environment in which campers become progressive and compassionate thinkers and high-level communicators.
When issues and misbehavior do occur, we utilize a positive approach, based on respectful, relevant, and related consequences. Our emphasis with our staff is on positive reinforcement for desired behavior as opposed to a punitive approach. We focus on proactively cultivating an environment in which acceptance and understanding of all campers and staff exists and is the norm. Staff acknowledges misbehaviors are not necessarily a personal attack on another camper, the camp, or the staff member, and acknowledge that underlying personal and emotional issues may need to be considered. It is our practice to inform and involve parents for more serious matters when they present. Of course, when necessary, the proper authorities will be contacted.
