Palmira’s (also known as Mima) relationship with the Hispanic Senior Center started long before some others.
Back in 1984, Mima heard from her church about a center opening and looking for volunteers to help around. She decided to work in the kitchen, and from there, she would always be involved.
After retirement, she joined the center as a participant and enjoys spending time with her friends and playing bingo.
Mima also takes advantage of the center's group trips with the participants, such as trips to Canada, visits to the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and community events hosted by the city.
In 2023, the City of Cleveland hosted its annual Senior Day at City Hall and asked the center to nominate one senior to honor during the program. Ramonita, Director of the Hispanic Senior Center, and her staff chose Mima due to her long-term commitment to the center and all she has done.
“I had no clue until my name was called,” Mima said, “I started crying. It was a big surprise to me.”
Everyone at the center knows her for her kindness and friendliness and was ecstatic for her.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, the center has a day in which participants and staff bring food that represents their culture and the town they are from while listening to music from all Hispanic and Latino communities.
Having special days like this at the center allows participants to reconnect with their cultures and let others learn about their hometowns and where they come from.
“This program is good because there are people here who can help each other and pick each other up,” Mima said.
