After her daughter heard about the Hispanic Senior Center, Ilda decided to see what activities she could participate in.
14 years later, Ilda keeps coming back every day to socialize and hang out with her friends that she has met through the center.
"They [staff] understand me, and they are nice with everyone here," Ilda said.
During the day, participants of the Hispanic Senior Center can partake in many activities like bingo, arts and crafts, dancing, listening to music, playing dominoes, and much more.
Ilda's favorite activities at the center are arts and crafts, which she can take home, and dancing to music.
From her first interaction with the center to now, she has noticed that she has become happier.
"Before I came here, I was depressed, but since I started coming here, I've been more involved with the community," Ilda shared.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, the center takes time to embrace all participants' cultures by allowing them to bring food that represents the town that they come from.
Ilda shares that her favorite foods she brings are vegetables, avocados, and rice. She also shares her culture by wearing skirts and dresses that people in Puerto Rico wear.
“[They’re] beautiful dresses. Red, black, the colors of the flag," Ilda said.
Places like the Hispanic Senior Center allow people to embrace their Hispanic heritage without judgment.
"I love it here. They help not only me, but everybody when they need it," Ilda shares, "I love them, they help so much."
The Hispanic Senior Center acts as a safe place for the Hispanic community and continues to welcome members of that community.
