21 years ago, Andres left Puerto Rico to give his two daughters a better education.
He worked tirelessly to save money to buy a house, send both of them to college, and create a better life.
Now that his daughters are married and in college, Andres had nothing to work for as hard as he had been for the past 20 years.
He became very depressed and rarely left his house. Still, once he had a conversation with his lawyer, he was recommended to go to the Hispanic Senior Center to participate in their activities and events.
Seven months later, Adnres finds himself happier and active with others in the community.
"I was very depressed and now I have somewhere to go every day," Andres said, "[The center] helps people come socialize with other people,"
The Hispanic Senior Center offers a wide range of recreational and socialization activities for participants while also focusing on the cultural and linguistic needs of seniors within Greater Cleveland's Hispanic community.
When at the center, Andres loves playing Bingo and dominoes with his friends, but there are also group trips that they take throughout the year.
The center takes many trips, like picnics in the MetroParks, participating in community events hosted by the City of Cleveland, museums, etc. Still, one of Andres' favorite trips was visiting the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Windsor, Ohio.
"We went to see the Virgin of Guadalupe, and I liked that; it was a good experience for me," Andres said.
The Hispanic Senior Center is a staple of the Hispanic community and continues to be a safe place for visitors.
Lunch and transportation are free of charge for all who cannot drive or do not have a way to get to and from the center on their own.
"If this center didn't exist, people would stay in the house sick, depressed, and they wouldn't do anything," Andres said, "When we come here, our minds are better."
