National Recovery Month: Every Person. Every Family. Every Community.

Posted September 23, 2024

Substance use affects millions of people in the world and has taken control of people’s lives, but there are ways to overcome substance abuse.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Recovery Month (NRM) promotes and supports new evidence-based treatment, recovery practices in the communities, and those in the community that make recovery possible.

NRM, originally called “TreatmentWorks! Month,” was created in 1989 to honor those who worked in addiction.

Less than 10 years later, the name was changed to “National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month” to focus on the recovery aspect as a whole.

In 2011, it was announced that the name was changed again to what we now know as National Recovery Month to focus on how recovery can happen in a variety of ways.

Unlike other awareness months, NRM keeps the theme the same every year: “Every Person. Every Family. Every Community.” This shows that recovery is possible for everyone regardless of their background or circumstances.

Here at Catholic Charities, we meet individuals where they’re at and offer comprehensive treatment programs for women and men to live an alcohol and drug-free life.

From residential treatment services to intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) or counseling to peer support, our programs are designed to fit the needs of each individual and their circumstances.

Here are some quotes from people in recovery who have received help through our programs:

“Active alcoholism is no way to live... It’s going to come to a head. You’re going to lose everything, including yourself. The only way to get it back is through treatment and a healthy support system,” Chad from Matt Talbot’s Residential Treatment said.

“I wish I could ball up everything I’ve gained through sobriety and give it to somebody to be like, ‘this is what you can get,’” Anna from the Intensive Outpatient Program said.

“My goal was to get into sober living, get off probation, get back full custody of my daughter, get a job, get a car, get a house, and graduate drug court. I’ve done all those things in almost 2 years of my sobriety.” Ashleigh from the Intensive Outpatient Program said.

Recovery is an option, and it doesn’t need to be done alone. Here are some signs and symptoms of substance use disorder from the Cleveland Clinic (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/16652-drug-addiction-substance-use-disorder-sud) to look out for:

  • Taking a substance in larger amounts and for a longer amount of time than you’re meant to if it’s a prescription.

  • Having a strong desire or urge to use the substance.

  • Having issues fulfilling responsibilities at work, school, or home due to substance use.

  • Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger.

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance.

If you or someone you love is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, there is hope and help available.
