Catholic Charities announces new director of Disability Ministries

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland has named Marilyn Scott, director of Disability Services, as the new director of Disability Ministries. This appointment comes after the January 2021 retirement of Fr. Joseph McNulty, former pastor of St. Augustine Church, who served since the late 1970s as director of the Apostolate for the Deaf (later renamed Disability Ministries). Scott will remain in her current position as director of Disability Services as she takes on this additional role.

Disability Services & Ministries provide a variety of educational, social and recreational programs, as well as spiritual, pastoral, sacramental and catechetical services for persons of all ages and abilities. The office also partners with several local agencies and organizations to offer other services, including residential living facilities for children and adults, respite care and day activity centers.

"Marilyn has been blessed with a heart for serving persons with disabilities, and her leadership emphasizes Catholic Charities' core value of respecting the dignity of the person," said Terence Flanagan, executive director of Mission and Specialized Ministries. "I look forward to working with Marilyn and her experienced team as we explore future opportunities for the services and ministries."

Upon joining Catholic Charities in 1992, Scott served as program director of Disability Services before taking over as director from Dennis McNulty in 2018.

"For years Disability Services and Disability Ministries have had two separate directors, however we always worked very closely together serving persons with disabilities in the community and in the Parish," she said. "Now that I am the Director of the combined Disability Services & Ministries, I look forward to learning more about persons who are deaf, blind and those with mental illness and how we can bring even more awareness to Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Cleveland."

In 2015 Scott received Catholic Charities' St. Elizabeth of Hungary Mission & Values Award, which recognizes employees who show outstanding dedication and commitment to the organization's mission.

Scott holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Kent State University, as well as a certificate in executive leadership from John Carroll University.
