Earlier today, Catholic Charities staff gathered together at La Sagrada Familia Church in Cleveland's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood to celebrate its 21st Annual St. Elizabeth of Hungary Mass & Awards.

Catholic Diocese of Cleveland Bishop Edward Malesic presided over the Mass, held every year on a date near the feast day of St. Elizabeth. The patroness saint of Catholic Charities devoted her life to serving the poor and marginalized, work that we strive to continue each day throughout the communities we serve. The annual celebration is a time to not only honor the saint, but also all Catholic Charities employees who show dedication and commitment to our mission.

The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Award is also an important part of the celebration, presented to an employee who embodies the qualities of St. Elizabeth—both in their work with Catholic Charities and separate volunteer work. This year the honor was presented to Tammy Hill, office manager at Catholic Charities Ashland County and Catholic Charities Wayne County, who has been an employee with the organization for the last 26 years.

Prior to receiving her award, President and CEO Patrick Gareau read aloud a portion of her nomination letter, in which Tammy is described as "the personification of compassion" who goes above and beyond for others. She not only mentors staff she supervises, but acts as an advocate for them, spending extra time with those who need more help. Outside of her work, Tammy volunteers with Wayne County's Strive Mentoring program and served as a volunteer member of the Ohio Patriot Guard for nearly 10 years.

The Servant Leader Award, normally given to a single employee, was presented to the following individuals in recognition of their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Andrea Harris, Sr. Director, Human Resources
  • Garrick Lipscomb, Director, Information Services
  • Kathy Yager, Director, Performance Improvement

The following employees were also honored with our Mission and Values Awards:

  • Lisa Sepulveda, Finance Manager, Rose-Mary
  • Mary Smith, Advocate, Disability Ministries
