Catholic Campaign for Human Development

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the anti-poverty program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The goal of Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is to reach out to help low-income individuals and those facing poverty to find the resources they need to improve their communities and their lives. This work is inspired by Catholic Social Teaching and the Scriptures, in which Jesus calls us to carry out His mission "to bring good news to the poor, release to captives, sight to the blind and let the oppressed go free" (Luke 4:18).

CCHD Grants & Awards

Awarded each year, CCHD grants are intended to help people break the cycle of poverty. CCHD has a national collection every year to support local and national grants, and the generous contributions of parishioners throughout the United States make these grants possible. After the collection, a portion of the donations remains in the Diocese of Cleveland to fund the local CCHD grants.

The Community Development Grant and the Economic Development Grant are the two national CCHD grant programs, which range in funding from $25,000 to $75,000. To learn more about these grants, click the buttons below.

CCHD grants are awarded to parishes and organizations working to change social structures and policies that undermine life and dignity, especially for the poor and powerless. Local grants include awards of up to $5,000. We currently offer two grant programs, one for youth organizations and one for community non-profits:

  • Local Youth & Young Adult Grant
The Local Youth & Young Adult Grant is for youth/young adult organizations within the Diocese of Cleveland that are looking to fund projects that support and promote the mission of CCHD. The objective of the Campaign is to give grants to projects that demonstrate both the intention and the capacity to effectively work toward the elimination of the root causes of poverty and to enact institutional change.

  • Local Community Grant
The Local Community Grant is for non-profits within the Diocese of Cleveland that are looking to fund projects that support and promote the mission of CCHD. The objective of this grant is to fund projects that demonstrate both the intention and the capacity to effectively work toward the elimination of the root causes of poverty and to enact institutional change

Any organization within the Diocese of Cleveland that complies with the CCHD application criteria and guidelines may apply. Organizations do not need to be Catholic or affiliated with the Catholic Church but must be in union with all CCHD criteria and guidelines.

Fr. David Fallon Award

Ready to submit your nomination for the 2022 Fr. David Fallon Award? Scroll to the bottom of this page to download the nomination materials.

The Fr. David Fallon Award is presented annually to an individual or organization within the Diocese of Cleveland that mirrors Fr. Fallon's commitment to peace and justice. Fr. Fallon Awards include awards of up to $500.

Rev. David Fallon (b.1944, d. 2009) was a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland who prioritized working for the common good. He was ordained in 1970 and during his priesthood, he served the poor and marginalized in El Salvador amidst the country’s violent civil war. After Fr. Fallon returned to the U.S. he served the Catholic Hispanic population in the Diocese of Cleveland.

With love and dedication, Fr. Fallon also worked for justice with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the Catholic Commission of Cuyahoga County. He understood the CCHD values of empowering the poor and working for justice as being essential for creating peace in the world, and he promoted these CCHD values as well as the CCHD national collection.

Fr. Fallon was a pivotal member of the CCHD Committee responsible for awarding the CCHD local grants, and he was the Chair of the International Peace and Justice Committee for the Commission on Catholic Community Action. At his passing in 2009, he was the pastor of La Sagrada Familia in Cleveland.

Fr. Fallon’s life was a testament to working for peace and justice, and this award is presented in his name to individuals or organizations that show a similar commitment.
